In this khutbah we wanted to briefly look at a passage in the Qur’an that is in surah an-Najm. This passage would show us a reality back in the time of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that could be linked to the situation of you and I as well. We may sometimes feel or think that the actions we do are okay, from which we enter this mental state of comfort. But here Allaah is warning is by saying that we do not know the reality that Allaah knows. You and I must continue to look at ourselves and continue to strive in maximizing our efforts towards doing good, and minimizing those things Allaah dislikes. And as we are perfecting our deeds, there may be times we will have to decline wordly matters, which could perhaps make you afraid of leaving them. But then Allaah says that he is the one who gives wealth (enriches), and that he is the one who provides satisfaction (suffices).
Have you seen the one who turned away
And give a little and [then] refrained?
Does he have knowledge of the unseen, so he sees?
Or has he not been informed of what was in the scriptures of Moses
And [of] Abraham, who fulfilled [his obligations] –
That no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another
And that there is not for man except that [good] for which he strives
And that his effort is going to be seen –
And that it is He who enriches and suffices
